What is an autogas car?
An autogas car (LPG, liquefied petroleum gas) is a car with a combustion engine in which the autogas can be used as fuel. LPG is a mixture of propane and butane. It is produced as a by-product during the refining of crude oil or the processing of natural gas. Autogas is therefore an alternative fossil fuel, the availability of which is linked to that of oil and natural gas.
Autogas can be used as a fuel in internal combustion engines with positive ignition, i.e. gasoline engines, with the aid of the appropriate technical and electronic modifications, and is thus considered a substitute for petrol. In a car, liquefied petroleum gas is stored in liquid form in a pressure tank at a pressure of 10 bar. In addition to the fuel tank for the LPG, the liquefied petroleum gas vehicles also have a petrol tank and can be powered by both fuels. The LPG can be refuelled at the filling stations similar to conventional fuels. Some car manufacturers offer new cars with an autogas system ex works, otherwise it is also possible to retrofit many used cars with petrol engines with a LPG system.
Information on the tables
The upper table provides an up-to-date market overview of new cars with an LPG system ex works which are sold in Germany. The table below gives an overview of autogas car models that have already been phased out and are no longer produced, but may be available as used cars. In addition to the name of the manufacturer and the model designation, the lists of cars with LPG contain the most important technical data and prices. The engine power describes the power of the combustion engine in LPG operation.
The combined LPG fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres and the CO2 emission in grams per kilometre are determined by the respective manufacturer according to a standardised procedure. The values for the tank content indicate the size of the fuel tank and the range with autogas drive, which depends on it in view of the fuel consumption. The overview also shows whether the car with LPG has a manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox. With the help of the selected technical data and the prices in the overview it is possible to compare the cars with LPG.
